Is Upper Eyelid surgery worth it?

Customer Testimonial

There is a very high satisfaction rate among patients who have had eyelid surgery. In fact, we often hear from patients that they wish they had considered it earlier. It is very natural to be apprehensive about proceeding with any surgery near your eyes; however, Dr. Peyman focuses entirely on procedures around the eyes. There have never been any serious complications.
The procedure itself doesn’t take too long and doesn’t involve much pain during or after the procedure. Therefore, the benefit to risk ratio is very high and many eyelid procedures can even be performed in the office setting.
Most people feel that their blepharoplasty procedure and the time it takes to recuperate was worth the money.
Furthermore, eyelid surgery has a “Worth It” rating of 95 percent on RealSelf. Patients give the following reasons for their satisfaction with the procedure:

  • Looking good/refreshed

  • Ease of procedure

  • Minimal pain

  • Ease of recovery

  • Affordable cost

How long does it take to heal after upper eyelid surgery?

It takes most patients about 2 weeks to heal following upper eyelid blepharoplasty and/or ptosis surgery. There is always some bruising and swelling around the eyes following surgery.
At the preoperative appointment 2 weeks before surgery, written instructions will be provided and thoroughly discussed to minimize bruising and swelling. Desk work and driving are permissible the day after surgery.
There are no eye covers blocking vision after surgery.

What is a good age for blepharoplasty?

Each patient is unique. There is no set age when the procedure needs to be done. While we generally expect to see more skin redundancy at an older age, eyelid hooding and/or lower eyelid bags can begin to occur in some as early as in their 30s and as late as in their 90s. It can run in families which may make it more likely to occur at a younger age.

How can you know whether you’re a candidate for eyelid surgery?

There is great variability in the degrees of skin redundancy and or ptosis. We see mild to severe cases as shown on our gallery website.
Some patients with milder forms, do not meet the strict insurance guidelines and have their surgery cosmetically.
Others, that do meet the criteria for coverage, have it done under their insurance. During your consult, Dr. Peyman will evaluate you and determine if your case qualifies for insurance coverage or not.

Are you put to sleep for eyelid surgery?

The type of anesthesia necessary for surgery depends on the type of procedure, patient’s comfort level, and medical clearance provided by the patient’s primary care physician.
Generally, the vast majority of upper eyelid surgeries are performed either under local anesthesia with some sedating medication in the office or under twilight anesthesia in the operating room. While your eyes will be closed throughout much of the case; for upper eyelid surgeries, you will be asked to open and close your eyes a few times to assess symmetry in real time and make adjustments if necessary.
