Is blepharoplasty covered by insurance?
Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is only covered if it meets all the insurance criteria to prove significant vision impact. In general, upper eyelid cases are strictly scrutinized by insurance. Dr. Peyman will help clarify if your case meets the criteria for coverage.
Patients give the following reasons for their satisfaction with the procedure
How long does it take to heal after upper eyelid surgery?
A consult with the doctor is essential to determine if you are or are not a good candidate for surgery. An evaluation of the surface of the eyes, the blink and closure functionality of the eyelids, and the position of the brow, and eyeball in the eye socket, are all necessary to determine how safe and effective a blepharoplasty will be. Patients with chronic dry eyes and the inability to completely blink or close the eyelids may not be good candidates for surgery or need to be treated prior to considering upper eyelid surgery. Patients with heavy brows may need additional surgery. What is a good age for blepharoplasty?
Each patient is unique. There is no set age when the procedure needs to be done. While we generally expect to see more skin redundancy at an older age, eyelid hooding and/or lower eyelid bags can begin to occur in some as early as in their 30s and as late as in their 90s. It can run in families which may make it more likely to occur at a younger age.
How can I treat my hooded eyes naturally?
Depending on the patient, laser skin resurfacing and/or Botox are some non-surgical ways to address milder cases of upper eyelid redundancy or hooding. The fractionated, ablative CO2 laser is designed to renew and tighten the wrinkled, sagging eyelid skin and beyond. Many patients elect to treat their full face, neck, and/or chest. It takes the skin about 1 full week to recover, but the effects are lasting. Botox can also be used to elevate the lateral brows which can help with the hooding above the eyelids. Botox is usually administered every 3-4 months to maintain its effectiveness.
Is a droopy eyelid the same as a hooded eyelid?
The terminology used to describe a heavy eyelid can be used interchangeably and incorrectly at times. In general, there are two main factors that could be contributing to a heavy and/or droopy and/or hooded upper eyelid. The first involves the upper eyelid position relative to the pupil of the eye. In some cases, the upper eyelid margin is coming close to or covering part of the pupil. This is called ptosis. The procedure to correct ptosis involves tightening the upper eyelid muscles and can be done externally or internally. The second involves the upper eyelid skin draping over the upper eyelid such that it makes the upper eyelid appear heavy. This is called dermatochalasis. It is addressed with a blepharoplasty procedure. At times, both procedures may be necessary to obtain the best results.
